Stellenbosch Museum
A must do activity is to spend a day visiting the many historical buildings and museums in Stellenbosch. There truly is something for everyone in this town! From the V.O.C. Kruithuis, an old gunpowder house where war memorabilia is on display, to the Toy and Miniature Museum, where you can take a trip back to the good old days before computer games and mobile phones. Addo National Elephant Park
Now the third largest national park in South Africa, Addo Elephant National Park has expanded to conserve a wide diversity of biodiversity, landscapes, fauna and flora. Stretching from the semi-arid Karoo area in the north around Darlington Dam, over the rugged Zuurberg Mountains, through the Sundays River valley and south to the coast between Sundays River mouth and Bushman’s river mouth, Addo covers about 180 000 hectares (444 700 acres) and includes the Bird and St Croix Island groups. Cango Caves
Cango Caves is the only show cave in Africa which offers a choice of Heritage (easy) or Adventure Tours. All tours are lead by experienced, knowledgeable and accredited Caves Guides. All tours are offered in English but Afrikaans, German, French and other language options may be available (please check language availability when making reservations). Due to a recent increase in visitors, it is ESSENTIAL to book either tour in advance Please note that every tour carries a (scientific) restriction in terms of visitors and by booking, you are not only making it comfortable for yourself, but also aiding us directly with our conservation effort of this non-renewable resource. Tours not wheelchair friendly. WARNING: ADVENTURE TOUR If you are pregnant or suffer from claustrophobia, high blood pressure, asthma or any muscular ailments, this tour is NOT suitable for you. Children under the age of six are not permitted on this tour option.
Cango Ostrich Farms
Cango Ostrich Show Farm is located in the lush Cango Valley, Schoemanshoek, 14km outside of Oudtshoorn on the main route towards the world famous Cango Caves. There are guided tours conducted daily from 08h00 to 16h30 (45 minutes duration). Tours are comprehensive and are not only interesting but also great fun. Visitors are allowed to sit or ride on birds (weight limit 75kg). It is recommended that groups pre book. The tour is an easy walk through the farm. Cape Point
Table Mountain National Park forms part of the Cape Floral Region, a World Heritage Site. It includes the majestic Table Mountain chain, which stretches from Signal Hill to Cape Point, and the coastlines of the Cape Peninsula. This narrow stretch of land, dotted with beautiful valleys, bays and beaches, contains a mix of extraordinarily diverse and unique fauna and flora.
Castle of Good Hope
Built between 1666 and 1679, the Castle is the oldest surviving building in South Africa.The Castle of Good Hope houses the military personnel of the SA army in the Western Cape.The five bastions were named after the main titles of Willem, the Prince of Orange. The Western Bastion was named Leerdam; followed in clockwise order by Buren, Katzenellenbogen, Nassau, and Oranje. Cradle of Humankind
The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site is one of eight South African World Heritage Sites. It is the world`s richest hominin site, home to around 40% of the world`s human ancestor fossils. This site currently occupies 53,000 hectares, it contains a complex of limestone caves, including the Sterkfontein Caves and the award-winning Visitor Interpretation Centre, Maropeng. The area is filled with hundreds of attractions and activities, from go-karting, zip-lining and horse riding to arts and crafts, fine dining and couples’ spa treatments.
Featherbed Nature Reserve
The Featherbed Nature Reserve, situated on the Western Head in Knysna, is the premier eco-experience on the Garden Route: Return ferry trip on the Knysna Lagoon to the Western Head. 4x4 vehicle & trailer drive up the headland onto the Reserve, stopping at spectacular viewpoints. Gold Reef City Theme Park
This world class theme park is situated on the fringe of the City of Johannesburg and has something for everyone. It is built around a 19th century gold mine, and the setting is a recreation of life in those early years of the City of Gold. Amusement Park rides, restaurants, a 4-D theatre, casino and conference centre, as well as an Animal Farmyard and Town Square where musicians and street performers take to their stage every day at 1pm, are just some of the good reasons to visit Gold Reef City.
Nelson Mandela Museum
Situated in the town of Mthatha and spread across three different areas, the Nelson Mandela Museum offers visitors and inspirational journey through the life of Nelson Mandela. Comprising three separate locations, the Nelson R. Mandela Museum consists of the Bhunga building in Mthatha, the Qunu component and an open-air museum at Mvezo. The Nelson Mandela Museum is designed for self guided activities. Visitors should allow between one and three hours to view all the exhibits.
Pilanesberg National Park
Pilanesberg National Park accommodates virtually every mammal of southern Africa, including the Big 5. There are healthy populations of lion, leopard, black and white rhino, buffalo and elephant, as well as a wide variety of rare and common species, including the nocturnal brown hyena, cheetah, sable, giraffe, zebra, hippo and even crocodile. Birdwatching is also excellent, with over 300 species recorded. There are nearly 200 kilometres of excellent quality roads for either self drive or guided game drives with professional Park guides. Numerous hides and picnic sites add to the enjoyment of this wildlife experience. There are numerous place to stay in the Park, form upmarket lodges to caravan parks and campsites. The Sun City complex is also on the doorstep.
Robben Island Museum
You are advised to pre-book your tickets to avoid disappointment. Robben Island is known the world over as a place of banishment, exile, isolation and imprisonment. For nearly 400 years colonial and apartheid rulers banished those they regarded as political troublemakers, social outcasts and the unwanted of society to this rocky, 575-hectare outcrop in Table Bay. The Island's unwilling inhabitants included slaves, political and religious leaders who opposed Dutch colonialism in East Asia, Khoikhoi and other African leaders who resisted British expansion in South Africa, leprosy sufferers, the sick, the mentally disturbed, French Vichy prisoners of war and most recently, political opponents of the apartheid regime in South Africa and Namibia. During the apartheid years Robben Island became internationally known for its institutional brutality. Some freedom fighters spent more than a quarter of a century in prison for their beliefs. Yet people such as Nelson Mandela emerged from here to lead South Africa to democracy with a message of tolerance, reconciliation and hope that moved the world. Those imprisoned on the Island succeeded on a psychological and political level in turning a prison "hell-hole" into a symbol of freedom and personal liberation. Robben Island came to symbolise, not only for South Africa and the African continent, but also for the entire world, the triumph of the human spirit over enormous hardship and adversity. In doing so it has offered a world still troubled by division, social injustice and intolerance, hope for the future. Join us on a pilgrimage to this World Heritage Site.
Table Mountain
Table Mountain is officially one of the New7Wonders of Nature and a prominent landmark overlooking the city of Cape Town. Whether hiking up one of the many trails, or using the cableway, the view from Table Mountain is a must-see for anyone in Cape Town. Should you choose to hike, it is recommended that you follow the basic safety rules outlined by Sanparks, stick to the trail and never hike alone. Table Mountain National Park provides visible uniformed policing and patrols on the trails.
The Apartheid Museum
The Apartheid Museum, the first of its kind, illustrates the rise and fall of apartheid. The exhibits have been assembled and organised by a multi-disciplinary team of curators, film-makers, historians and designers. They include provocative film footage, photographs, text panels and artefacts illustrating the events and human stories that are part of the epic saga, known as apartheid. A series of 22 individual exhibition areas takes the visitor through a dramatic emotional journey that tells a story of a state-sanctioned system based on racial discrimination and the struggle of the majority to overthrow this tyranny.
The Big Hole and Kimberley Mine Museum
Visitors are amazed by the size of the Big Hole when they first step onto the viewing platform. It’s the largest hand-dug excavation in the world, measuring 215 metres deep, with a perimeter 1.6 kms long. The mine was started in July 1871 and produced 2722 kilograms of diamonds from 22.5 million tons of earth in the 43 years up to August 1914 when it closed down. Today the Big Hole is surrounded by original old buildings relocated from their former sites to form a captivating open-air museum. The Visitor Centre tells the multi-faceted story of diamonds, this includes the of the people that sought them, the tools they used and the wealth they generated. In the Visitor Centre guest will have the opportunity to join a tour with a Site Guide. Other attractions of interest are the Underground Mine Experience; a 15-minute film on the diamonds of Kimberley; an Exhibition Centre with photographs, old artefacts and other archive material; and The Real Diamond Display, housed in a vault. The Cape Winelands
The Cape Winelands region boasts almost 50 wine estates, stretching from Cape Point, through the lush Cape Town suburb of Constantia, through to Durbanville and the nearby towns of Stellenbosch, Paarl, Wellington, Franschhoek, Somerset West , Hermanus and Stanford,and all within a comfortable hour or two’s drive from the Mother City. uShaka Marine World
Situated between Addington Beach and the harbour entrance, uShaka Marine World is an amazing all-day attraction for visitors to Durban. It encompasses a host of things to see and do, including the Southern hemisphere’s largest aquarium, a Wet ‘n Wild water world park with pools and slides galore, a reptile exhibit, Kids’ World, shark cage diving, an ocean walk experience, ray feeds, a snorkel lagoon, the Village Walk shopping precinct, three restaurants and plenty of fast food outlets.
Wild Coast
The Wild Coast in South Africa stretches along the Eastern Cape province`s northern coastline. It is an an untamed wilderness with views of the coastline, jagged cliffs, sheltered bays, wild beaches and hills and valleys. This is a hikers` paradise and can also be enjoyed on horseback. Fishing licenses must be acquired from any local Post Office. The Wild Coast is ideal for hiking, snorkelling and diving. There are a multitude of 4x4 trails, however beaches are off limits for drivers.
